Post Natal Depletion: A Guide for Dads

Published: 12/06/2019

Most mothers have experienced exhaustion, pain, forgetfulness, indecision, low energy levels, moodiness, or some form of baby brain. And it's no wonder: The process of growing a baby depletes a mother's body in substantial ways. As a result, a woman can suffer from the effects of post natal depletion for many years. For dads, it can be a minefield of uncertainty and misunderstanding.

Supporting woman and families with recovery from post natal depletion is the life work of our special guest Dr Oscar Serrallach. Dr Serrallach was first to recognise something he termed Post-Natal Depletion, describing the broader clinical pattern of many women presenting with these symptoms after having children. He has since dedicated his work towards researching this condition and applying the practice of Functional Medicine to help his clients with their recovery.

On this show, Dr Oscar and Sean Tonnet will nut through some of the most significant facts and actions Dads can make in supporting themselves, their woman and their children around this essential topic.

Strength in Vulnerability: Masculinity and Emotions

Published: 13/02/2019

The Strength in Vulnerability: For too long Men - fathers, sons, and brothers - have learned that it's better to suppress than express. Emotions, especially vulnerable ones, have been tightly wrapped up in our high-vis shirts as ‘too weak, too feminine or too sensitive’. In this weeks Pregnancy Birth and Beyond episode, join me Sean Tonnet, as I deconstruct the myth of vulnerability with my special guest Peter Chowan. Peter has worked as a Psychologist for more than 30 years. with extensive experience with men’s mental health and as a consultant to the World Health Organisation, UNFPA and UNESCO in more than a dozen countries.

Together we will reflect on our experience of working with men and, as men, explore the notion that vulnerability takes courage and bravery. A strength essential for our children in a new world

My Dad and I: Masculinity & Fatherhood. Part Two

Published: 10/01/2019

On this episode, our presenter and PBB dad, Sean Tonnet, will play part 2 of his special feature interview with his 90-year-old father Lex. In this instalment, Lex discusses an emerging spirituality that helped him mature and grow as a man and reflects on the importance of a safe and secure family culture that absolutely matches the contemporary evidence of attachment theory on raising healthy children.  At the end of the program, he discusses one thing that he feels men need to sustain them in their parenting and masculinity. Full of insightful learnings from a community elder on a life of fathering, masculinity and growing old, this show contrasts similarities and differences in parenting and being a man across generations. A thoughtful, honest discussion between father and son not to be missed!

Speak Up! Postpartum and Antenatal Depression and Anxiety in Dads

Published: 16/11/2018

Recognising, responding to and repairing postpartum and antenatal depression and anxiety in dads.

Pregnancy and the first year of parenthood is an exciting time that also brings many new challenges and responsibilities. It is now recognised that around 1 in 20 men experience depression during pregnancy (antenatal) and up to 1 in 10 new dads struggle with depression following the birth of their baby (postnatal).  Anxiety is just as common, and many men experience anxiety and depression at the same time (sourced from PANDA.org.au). It’s these facts that inspired my guest, Dr Matthew Roberts in his work with men experiencing perinatal and antenatal, anxiety and depression. Though initiatives such as Town hall Dads and My Doctors Handwriting, Matthew is connecting fathers, building awareness and redefining the landscape for new parents.

Dr John Travis on transforming relationships when baby comes

Published: 06/04/2018

Through his own experiences as a father, Dr John (Jack) Travis came to see how the normalised disconnection and separation of babies from their parents (eg through forced sleep schedules, isolation in cots) rather than recognising a baby's needs for closeness has created generations of families that struggle to keep together. Jack calls a father's negative reactions after the arrival of a baby "Male Postpartum Abandonment Syndrome" and shares many ideas and resources for healing.

Parenting & Personality Disorders: A light in dark corners

Published: 22/03/2018

De-stigmatising mental health and supporting stronger families

The celebrations and challenges of raising children can be a rich, diverse journey for all of us. Even when we are feeling mentally strong, there are moments when life, relationships and parenting is a bumpy road.

For 1 in 10 people, living with a personality disorder and parenting can add a tremendous strain to our family experiences and bonds. An umbrella term for more commonly referred to conditions like borderline, narcissism, obsessive compulsive, avoidant and schizotypal, personality disorder can cause significant distress and impairment for the person and families.

In this episode, I'll be traversing the mindscape of personality disorders, wellness, parenting and relationships with Dr Michelle Townsend; a Research Fellow at the Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute and Project Air Strategy for Personality Disorders at the University of Wollongong. Shining a light on a rarely recognised area of parenting, this show will help de-myth the stigma around mental health, whilst providing strategies and support for those living with a personality disorder.

24 Hour support for mental illness is available via Lifeline on 13 11 14.

Male Privilege: The Impact on Raising Children

Published: 08/02/2018

From birth, many boys are taught that to be a man you have to be competitive and emotionally tough and that vulnerability is a women's domain. How we socialise our children around privilege and entitlement impacts our society tremendously. Even in the most emotionally resourced families, boys and girls often see gender inequality constantly feeding into their subconscious through media, movies and books. This is the basis for what is referred to as male privilege. In this episode, we explore what it mean to be raising children in this culture. Sean Tonnet speaks with Luke Addinsall: therapist, consultant, facilitator and specialist in Mens Issues, whose work with men and families is changing our view on Masculinity and fathering.

Dad time: Maintaining your health & fitness when you become a parent

Published: 26/10/2017

From the throes of sleep deprivation to driving our children from one activity to the next, parenthood can wreak havoc on our usual schedule. As such, parenting and exercise are not usually words you see in the same sentence. Our needs will often come second to those of your children and fitness and health can become a much more difficult task. Understandably, this cost can be detrimental to our overall health, but also to our our capacity to parent effectively.

In this episode we talk with Horst Tomsan; father, husband and health professional about parenting, exercise, food and well-being.

Horst speaks from the heart in exploring the importance of setting up a family culture that recognises the importance of healthy lifestyles in parenting.

The missing link in birth preparation

Published: 11/08/2017

According to the Relationship Research Institute in Seattle, approx two thirds of couples find their relationship has suffered within three years of the birth of a child. Within five years of the birth of a first child, 13 percent of married couples divorce. This rate goes up to 39% for defacto couples 5 years after the child’s birth.*

Surely there’s some preparation couples can do, rather than adjusting their relationship on the run after baby arrives.

In this episode we meet Tondi Gilfillan and Sean Tonnet, relationship counsellors from Interrelate Family Centres, and discuss the importance of preparing our relationship during pregnancy for the enormous challenges. We explore how to build 'relationship scaffolding' and understand 'your dance as a couple'. A key tip is to discuss expectations you have about your new lives together, for example who will care for the baby and how.
