Birth is Just the Beginning with Catherine Bell
Published: 01/06/2020
In this show Sally speaks with mother, doula, author and maternity services advocate, Catherine Bell, about the importance of thoroughly exploring your options for life after birth, the postnatal period and having a clear plan in place. As Catherine says "birth is just the beginning" - the beginning of a marathon in the first weeks, months and years of your baby's life, and like all marathons, preparation is necessary to get the most out of this time.

Trends in Birth and Self-Care for Mothers
Published: 05/05/2020
This episode is in two parts:
Firstly Sally speaks with Moran Liviani, mother of 3 girls and doula based in Brisbane. Moran talks about the trends she's noticing with her clients during the COVID-19 pandemic. She says all of her clients would choose homebirth, if they could afford it. And that these are families who would have never considered homebirth before but they have now come to see birthing in hospital as dangerous and birthing at home safer. She also discusses the significant drop in inductions of labour.
A recent Lancet study on the safety of homebirth for low risk women: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.eclinm.2020.100319
Moran and her work as a doula and childbirth educator can be found at: www.2life.com.au.
In the second half, Nicola Liebke, mother of 3 boys and one step-daughter, teacher, postnatal doula and parent group leader shares why she believes self-care for mothers is so important during this time where so many find themselves teaching their kids at home while also balancing their work and other commitments. Nicola also shares her top 5 tips for self-care for mothers during this time: physical care, creative care, nature care, mind care and joining a women's circle.
Nicola can be found at www.moonhutmamas.com where she facilitates online women's circles.
Thank you Moran and Nicola!

17 Years and Counting: Homeschooling with Avalon Darnesh
Published: 30/03/2020
As the reality of the extent of the impact of COVID-19 is sinking in, we’re seeing our lives change in ways we never thought would happen. Many schools are closing down their campuses and reverting to online learning, or preparing to do so. So almost overnight we have seen a massive shift of our school age children to homeschooling. There’s a lot for the kids and especially their parents to navigate in this terrain while parents work out how they can continue their own work/study commitments while having the kids at home.
In this show Sally talks with a very experienced homeschooling mum who has always worked at home as well.
Avalon Darnesh is a mother in a blended family with her partner Brett and together they have five children aged 7 to 17. Avalon also has a free offering she created five years ago about how parents can get their own goals met while your kids are at home: https://www.blossomingwoman.com.au/blog/get-shit-done

Talking to our Kids about Racism with Robin DiAngelo, PhD
Published: 12/02/2020
For more than two decades Dr Robin DiAngelo, a white mother, childbirth educator turned racial and social justice educator and author of White Fragility from Seattle, Washington in the US has been examining how from her birth onwards, she subconsciously played a role in perpetuating racial inequality in her society. When she stepped into a new job in the mid ‘90’s she embarked on a massive learning journey to discover that she, as a vegetarian, yoga practising, liberal minded femininist, had a lot to learn.
In this show we will be examining the most fundamental of our social fractures, racism, racial inequality, your role in it, and what you can do as a parent or someone who spends time with children can do about it.
Note: Robin participated in this interview from her home in Seattle, Washington and acknowledged the traditional owners of that land, the Duwamish people. She pays rent to the Duwamish people under this scheme: https://www.realrentduwamish.org/

Identical Twins: Nature or Nurture?
Published: 22/01/2020
If we raise two genetically identical individuals in exactly the same way will they turn out to have similar personalities? Craig Jones speaks with Sally about his experiences as a father of twin girls and a third daughter and what he's learned about "nature vs nurture". He also shares some of his family's dynamics, the challenges, how they cope, and what insights he would share, if he could, with his pre-father self.
In the last part of the show midwife Dr Robyn Thompson explains how best to support mothers immediately after birth and in the weeks after.
