The Positive Birth Movement
The Positive Birth Movement are a global network of free to attend antenatal groups, linked up by social media. There are over 450 groups world-wide! They connect pregnant women together to share stories, expertise and positivity about childbirth and aim to challenge the epidemic of negativity and fear that surrounds modern birth, and help change birth for the better.
The Positive Birth Movement believes that every woman deserves a positive birth. But what does this mean? A positive birth means a birth in which a woman feels she has freedom of choice, access to accurate information, and that she is in control, powerful and respected. A birth that she approaches, perhaps with some trepidation, but without fear or dread, and that she then goes on to enjoy, and later remember with warmth and pride. A positive birth does not have to be ‘natural’ or ‘drug free’ – it simply has to be informed from a place of positivity as opposed to fear. The Positive Birth Movement is woman-centred and as such respects a woman’s human right to choose where and how she has her baby. You can birth with positivity in hospital or at home, with or without medical intervention. You can have a positive caesarean, or a positive home water birth. Positive Birth is about approaching birth realistically, having genuine choice, and feeling empowered by your experience. The Positive Birth Movement believes that communication is the key to shaking up birth. By coming together, in real life and online, and sharing experiences, feelings, knowledge and wisdom, women can take back childbirth. There is a current CrowdFunding campaign to support the amazing work of PBM. Chip in here. |
Challenging negativity and fear of childbirth, and brimming with everything you need to know about labour, birth, and the early days of parenting, The Positive Birth Book is the must-have birth book for women of the 21st century.
Work out what kind of birth you really want, and learn how to maximise your chances of getting it, in this refreshing, warm and witty guide to pregnancy, birth and the early weeks. Packed with vital and cutting-edge information on everything from building the ultimate birth plan, to your choices and rights in the birth room; from optimal cord clamping, to seeding the microbiome; from the inside track on breastfeeding, to woman-centred caesarean, The Positive Birth Book shows you how to have the best possible birth, regardless of whether you plan to have your baby in hospital, in the birth centre, at home or by elective caesarean. Find out how the environment you give birth in, your mindset and your expectations can influence the kind of birth you have, and be inspired by the voices of real women, who tell you the truth about what giving birth really feels like. |
Milli Hill is a mother of three children and a powerhouse in the world of maternity consumer advocacy. In just four short years she has created the Positive Birth Movement and has facilitated the formation of 450 Positive Birth pregnancy support groups around the world. All groups are free to attend and view birth in all its forms in a positive way. Milli is passionate about positive birth as a human right for all women and campaigns and speaks on this issue in the media and at high profile conferences and events. She is a columnist for Telegraph Women and the author of The Positive Birth Book

Healthy Earth, Healthy Birth mini-screenings 2016When we found out there was going to be an international conference focussing on the links between gentle birth & child rearing and how these children will interact with their environment, we were stoked! The events were taking place over a week-long conference at Findhorn in Scotland & we were very keen to connect our community with this content.
We had put together a couple of screening evenings and were delighted with the response. The space provided was the perfect space for birth workers to come together to be nurtured and discuss their work safely within a supportive group of people. We were inspired to continue supporting this space and created a monthly coming together for birth workers. stay tuned for details about these events here on the shindigs page. So far we have screened four of the eight plannery sessions and we are planning to open up the sessions to the public in a later whole-day event. Stay tuned - details for this event are coming soon. Thank you to UPLIFT and their amazing production team who sponsored this event by providing a beautiful space for us to hold these screenings. |

Red Tent Festival 2012The Red Tent Festival - a Celebration of Women and Birth
There is enormous benefit to families and the community when they come together to share information and delight in life. Informal support groups are formed, friendships are made and kids have LOADS of fun. The Red Tent Festival events are volunteer run project of women from our local community and the Northern Rivers branch of Maternity Coalition Inc. Members of our Management Team and some of our past radio presenters were key volunteers of this event and had the enormous pleasure of being involved with connecting the women of our community and beyond to inform and support each other, and to raise money for the women of our region. |
Red Tent Festival 2009This was first of the Red Tent Festivals held in Federal, NSW in November 2009. Many mothers of young children and local birthworkers gave their time to present this event, the key organisers being Suzanne Weir, Vicky Gersch, Annie Bryant, Leanne Crumpton, and many, many more. Our community is indebted to this group of dedicated women who made this first event happen.
